This piece was originally written for my junior year independent work at Princeton between January and May 2020.  I was burnt out and felt aimlessly stuck in stasis as I was starting the piece, but I found myself reminiscing about certain fleeting moments of escape from that headspace.  Covid-imposed lockdowns during the middle of this piece’s composition prompted more thinking about juxtaposition of stasis and momentary release.

Due to pandemic circumstances, I moved on from thinking about a performance of this piece until I was invited to submit a work for the Walden School’s 50th Reunion Alumni Composers Forum in August 2023, where I quickly had to change the violin part into a flute part.

Special thanks to the Walden School for providing me an opportunity to finally hear this piece live; to Dmitri Tymoczko and Lukáš Janata for their mentorship; and to Laura Cocks, Joshua Rubin, Thea Mesirow, and David Friend for their excellent performance.
